Deputies arrest 15 in sweep of west side

Sheriff's deputies, armed with 200 arrest warrants, swept through West Baltimore yesterday morning to search for suspected criminals and briefly disrupt the neighborhood's drug trade.

Called Operation Westside Story II, the deputies captured 15 suspects who they believe are responsible for a combined 181 crimes ranging from attempted murder to shoplifting. In addition to the arrests, deputies fanned out across drug corners and searched people for contraband.

The operation, conducted from 3 a.m. to noon, followed the March 25 Westside Story sweep, which led to 51 fugitive arrests.

Man found fatally stabbed in basement apartment

Baltimore police are investigating the stabbing death of a man found inside a basement apartment in the 700 block of Park Ave. yesterday.

Police said the victim was a man believed to be in his mid-50s, but they had not yet identified him. He was found dead about 5:20 p.m. Investigators knew of no suspects or motive in the killing.

Naval Academy Marines are facing drug charges

WASHINGTON - Three Marines who provide security at the Naval Academy in Annapolis will face drug charges in a court-martial following an investigation into use of the mood-altering drug ecstasy at the installation, officials said yesterday.

The three Marines are Lance Cpl. Adam C. Hartman, Lance Cpl. Jeremy D. Thompson and Lance Cpl. Nathan W. Vick, according to the Marine Barracks in Washington. All three are stationed on the Naval Academy campus, and officials said they will be charged with possession and use of a controlled substance, facing penalties if convicted ranging from reductions in pay, confinement for six months or bad-conduct discharge.In Anne Arundel

Man charged with setting fire during argument

A 44-year-old man who is accused of setting his estranged wife's living room on fire while his wife and teen-age daughter were home was arrested early yesterday in Severn, authorities said.

Monford Junius White, 44, was charged after police say he doused the living room furniture with rubbing alcohol and then lighted the furniture during an argument with his 40-year-old wife.

No one was injured in the fire in the 8200 block of Severn Orchard Circle, said fire officials.
