Safeway supermarket to open Wednesday at center near Crofton

A Safeway supermarket - the shopping centerpiece of the Village and Waugh Chapel mixed-use community near Crofton - will have its grand opening at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The first store to open in the newly developed shopping center off Route 3 South, the 55,000-square-foot Safeway will include a pharmacy, bakery, full-service deli, floral center and fresh seafood department, along with a coffee bar and a Sun Trust Bank branch.

Plans for the mixed-use community include 425,000 square feet of retail space, 400 senior-housing units, a sports complex and a 45,000-square-foot office building, all arranged around a two-tiered lake.

"It is with great pleasure that we open this store to our friends and neighbors in Crofton," said Mike Bessire, president of Safeway's Eastern Division.

The manager will be Bob Sprouse, whose 33-year Safeway career includes 26 as a store manager - most recently in Dunkirk. Assistant managers will be Roberta Machande and Terry Dean.

Job applications are being accepted at the store, which will employ about 150 people. Information: 301-918-7001.
