Silverbulletday could become the leading money-earning female in the history of horse racing Sunday if she wins the $600,000 Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park.
The 4-year-old filly heads the field of eight entered yesterday for Delaware Park's signature event, a 1 1/4 -mile Grade III stakes for fillies and mares.
A winner of 15 of 22 races, Silverbulletday has earned $3,027,207.
The $360,000 winner's share of Sunday's purse would catapult her past Serena's Song, the richest filly or mare with earnings of $3,283,388.
Retired after the 1996 season, Serena's Song is a broodmare in Kentucky.
Despite losing her last three races, Silverbulletday was installed the 6-5 morning-line favorite because of her popularity with bettors and fans.
A two-time Eclipse-award winner, she is one of horse racing's few stars.
"I've had reporters call me who wouldn't know who Beautiful Pleasure or Heritage of Gold is," said Chris Sobocinski, publicity director at Delaware Park, of the top two mares in training. "All they want to know is, 'Is Silverbulletday running?' "
Her trainer Bob Baffert answered that question by flying in the filly yesterday from Churchill Downs.
Baffert remained in Kentucky for the yearling sale at Keeneland, but he said by telephone that he believes Silverbulletday is primed for victory.
"She's training awesome," Baffert said. "I expect a great race out of her."
After a sensational 3-year-old season of eight victories in 11 races, Silverbulletday has won only once this year at 4.
The mare who beat her last time, Lu Ravi, will test her again.
In the Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap July 4 at Monmouth Park, Lu Ravi edged Silverbulletday by a head in a thrilling stretch battle.
A 5-year-old winner of $1,182,581, Lu Ravi is 3-2 in the morning line.
Tap to Music, winner of last year's Delaware Handicap, will defend her crown under the former Maryland jockey Edgar Prado. The lone Maryland entrant is Proud Owner, owned and trained by the Pimlico-based Richard W. Small.
