25 Years Ago: Recreation Council Sponsoring Trips to Orioles Games -- The Mt. Airy Recreation Council is sponsoring trips to two Orioles games in connection with the Summer Youth Recreation Program of Baltimore City and the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks. Tickets for 48 youths aged 7 to 16 years will be free of charge.

50 Years Ago: Germans At New Windsor Sent to Maryland Homes, Local Families Adopt Two School Students for One Year, Eighty-two in the Group -- It was three o'clock in the morning, July 6 when 82 German teenage boys and girls climbed sleepily out of buses at the New Windsor Service Center. Behind them were first steps in the most momentous experience of their lives. Before them lay materialization of a dream, one whole year of study in the United States, living in American homes as native high school pupils do. They are the second such contingent to be received in the country under a little known International project of the Brethren Service Commission. The first students arrived in the summer of 1949 and they will return to Europe in September.

75 Years Ago: Mt. Airy, Recovering From Its Recent Big Fire -- The town of Mt. Airy, which was visited some weeks ago by a $200,000 fire that wrecked a large section of the business district, is planning to rebuild. The National Bank, whose former home was destroyed, has purchased three adjoining lots which will later be improved, and will begin at once the building of a new home. Since the recent fire the town authorities have been negotiating with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co., for a piece of land upon which is situated a very desirable spring, which the town planned to use in developing a water supply for the town, but efforts along this line are understood be unavailing. The authorities are now considering the drilling of an artesian well as a source of supply, and in the event a sufficient water supply is available the town will construct a tower and erect a tank with a capacity of about 124,000 gallons for the use of the city and for fire protection.

100 Years Ago: A torrid wave of intense energy came down upon this section of the country on Sunday morning and continued until Thursday, when it was slightly abated, although the temperature is still high. The mercury went up to several degrees above 100 on Monday and Tuesday and was only a degree or two lower on Wednesday. On Thursday the maximum was about 90. The official record of maximum temperatures in Baltimore was 96 on Sunday, 100 on Monday and Tuesday, 98 on Wednesday and 88 on Thursday. A refreshing shower of rain fell in this locality on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday afternoon and night more copious showers occurred and extended more widely over the county, breaking a drought.
