CHEVY CHASE -Dirk Schultz had about 30 minutes of sleep before yesterday's second round of the Maryland Open, as he spent the early morning hours with his wife preparing for the birth of their first child. Joelle Nicole Schultz was born at 5:14 a.m., hours before her father teed off at Columbia Country Club.
With his hospital entry bracelet still around his wrist, Schultz shot a 70-138 to take a two-stroke lead into today's final round.
"Right now I'm ready for a little for a little rest," said Schultz after bogeying the last two holes.
Schultz, who led last year's Open by five strokes after two rounds but lost, is trying to figure out how to keep his lead.'The course was set up harder today," he said. "I drove the ball bad but putted well - I saved par on six and seven."
Second-place Dennis Winters from Lighthouse Sound Country Club shot even-par 140.
Jack Skilling moved into contention with a course record 4-under 66, three strokes back.
"Putting wasn't as difficult," said Skilling, of Farm Lake Country Club. "The rain softened the greens and slowed them a bit, but they're still quick. ... If you hit solid and don't be too aggressive, you can score well on this course."
Keith Unikel, the 1998 champion, shot a 1-over 71 and Wayne Defrancesco shot a 2-over 72 to also finish at 141. David Hutsell from Willow Springs shot 72 to put him near the top at 142.
Bill Gombert and Micheal Hudak, who were both tied for the lead after the first round, had troubling hitting greens yesterday. Gombert (75) was at 143 and Hudak (80) at 148.
Forty-two players survived the cut at 150. The first tee-time is at 7:30 a.m. today.
