Five teen-age boys were arrested Wednesday and another is being sought in connection with the vandalism of several signs and buildings in Mount Airy, including the state police office in town, police said.
Three 17-year-olds and two 16-year-olds were charged with malicious destruction of property. The boys were released to their parents pending action by juvenile authorities, state police said.
According to police, vandals spray-painted Twin Arch Shopping Center, FMH Mount Airy Plaza, Twin Ridge Elementary School and Mount Airy Middle School, as well as signs at Warfield Homes at Challedon and the fire company's activity building. In addition, state and county highway signs and a Mount Airy bicentennial sign were damaged.
The incidents occurred between June 19 and July 4, police said.
The person who provided a tip leading to the arrests is eligible for a $1,000 reward offered by the town and several businesses, police said.
