2 charged in murder try; man in serious condition

An Ellicott City man remained in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday after a fight Tuesday that landed two Columbia men in jail.

Michael Oraze, 18, is being treated for skull fractures from baseball bat blows to the head.

Kelly Joseph Mahaney, 18, and Peter D. Driscoll, 18, are charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless conduct/assault with intent to injure in the incident, police said. They were being held yesterday at the Howard County Detention Center without bond.

Police said the incident took place Tuesday in the 4700 block of Dorsey Hall Drive when Oraze was approached by two men while pumping gas at a Mobile station. One of the men struck Oraze in the head twice with a baseball bat. The other kicked and punched Oraze as he lay on the ground.

Police said the three men were involved in an incident earlier Tuesday during which they say Oraze cut one of the men with a box cutter.

Mahaney, who was arrested Wednesday, was treated for cuts to the abdomen, arms and ears, police said. Driscoll was arrested later Wednesday.

Police are continuing the investigation.
