Laurel weekend

A well-balanced field of nine colts and geldings will match strides in the second running of the E. William Fury Memorial Stakes. Among those vying for the major portions of a $60,000 purse are three older runners, which own victories in their most recent starts, all added added-money events. B Flat Major, claimed from his 99 finale by trainer Scott Lake, is 2-for-2 this year at Philadelphia Park, including the Jewel Stakes. Bion, another runner under Lake's care, won the Rapid Transit Stakes in Philly. Saratoga Cure opened the current Laurel meeting with a victory in the Chase Me Stakes. The field also includes Clever Gem.

Dawn Princess appears a standout among the eight Maryland-bred fillies entered for the 19th running of the Pearl Necklace Stakes. The 1 1/8 -mile turf encounter carries a $60,000 purse. Besides being unbeaten in three starts over the infield, the Carlos Garcia-trained daughter of Polish Numbers is the only stakes winner in the field. Dawn Princess crashed the added-money ranks at Colonial Downs as a 2-year-old when she won the Tippett Stakes. She's likely to get a challenge from Chapel, who was claimed from a winning debut by trainer Scott Lake. She won her next start against allowance company.
