Public can suggest name for Westminster school

Residents have until July 14 to submit their choice for a name for the new Westminster area high school.

Suggestions should be sent to the superintendent of schools at 125 N. Court St., Westminster 21157.

The superintendent will submit a final recommendation to the school board at its October meeting.

Names for consideration should give proper recognition to the school and community of which it will be a part.

Westminster High grad awarded scholarship

Andrew Gayer of Westminster has been awarded a National Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association scholarship.

The Westminster High School graduate was a member of National Honor Society, the drama club and YMCA board of directors, editor of the school newspaper and the varsity mascot.

NEMRA established its scholarship program to reward the academic excellence of children of its members and employees.

Gayer plans to attend Western Maryland College in the fall.

Mount de Sales honors Carroll County students

Two Mount de Sales Academy students from Carroll County were recently honored for their athletic ability.

Kristen Aversa of Woodbine was given the most valuable player award for outdoor track.

Erin Middleton of Westminster earned the most improved player award for outdoor track.

Mount de Sales is a Catholic, all-girls college preparatory high school in Catonsville.

Carroll education official remains head of Md. panel

Harry Fogle, supervisor of special education for Carroll County Public Schools, was re-elected chairman of the state special education advisory committee at its spring meeting.

This is the third consecutive year he has been elected chairman of the committee, made up of parents of students with disabilities, advocacy groups, educators, consumers and school system administrators.

Fogle has been an educator for more than 28 years and has been supervisor of special education for Carroll County schools since 1989.

Area students graduate from W.Va. Wesleyan

Two Carroll County students have graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon.

Jaime Baile, daughter of Edgar and Judith Baile of Union Bridge and a 1996 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School, received a degree in dramatic arts.

Carrie Tamburo, daughter of Thomas and Gloria Tamburo of Woodbine and a 1996 graduate of South Carroll High School, received a degree in athletic training.

West Virginia Wesleyan was founded in 1890 and enrolls about 1,500 Students.

Matthew Simmont receives master's in social science

Matthew William Simmont, son of Chuck and Mary Lou Simmont of Westminster, has received a master's degree in social science from Michigan State University.

He graduated from Francis Scott Key High School in 1993 and Frostburg State University in 1998. He received his master's in the area of regional and urban planning.

Stepbrothers to join Coast Guard in August

Stepbrothers Wesley R. Samosuk III of Westminster and Michael Kenney IV of Frederick will enter the Coast Guard in August.

Samosuk is a 2000 graduate of Westminster High School. He is the son of Wesley R. Samosuk Jr. of Westminster and Kathy Kenney of Woodlawn. Michael Kenney is the son of Michael Kenney III of Wood. lawn and Angel Hanson of Frederick. He is a 2000 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School.
