Powerful storm leaves thousands in the dark

About 22,000 businesses and residences, most of them in Anne Arundel County, lost electricity last night when a storm with high winds, lightning and heavy rain pelted the metropolitan area.

Julie Arthur, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said the storm dumped more than an inch of rain on the area.

Power was expected to be restored to most of the customers by noon today.
