Library to offer summer reading programs

The Carroll County Public Library will hold its summer reading programs tomorrow through Aug. 5. The five branches will offer reading and other programs for children.

Reading Rhythms is open to children from infancy through fifth grade. The eight-week program combines reading and music with game activities. Children can earn weekly reading incentives, watch programs and enter weekly prize drawings.

Incentives include a summer reading bag with a game board, bookmark, Baltimore Zoo pass and more. A $10 discount coupon to Six Flags America is available for families. Registration is required for Reading Rhythms.

Sound Bytes Reading Rhythms Summer Tour 2000 for children entering sixth grade and higher includes a game board, music trivia and prizes for reading eight or more books.

To launch the summer reading program, the Oriole Bird will visit all five library branches. Autographed pictures will be available, and parents can take photos.

The Oriole Bird schedule is: 10 a.m. at North Carroll and 1 p.m. at Westminster on Wednesday; 1 p.m. Thursday at Taneytown; and 10 a.m. at Eldersburg and 1 p.m. at Mount Airy on Friday. Registration is not required.

Registration is required for "Wizardry 101: The Magic of Books" for age 6 and older later in June. Mugwump (aka Jonathan Brace, magician) will demonstrate and reveal magic tricks.

The magic program is scheduled for: 10 a.m. at North Carroll, 1:30 p.m. at Taneytown and 4:30 p.m. at Eldersburg, all June 22; and 10 a.m. at Mount Airy and 1:30 p.m. at Westminster, both June 23.

The puppet show "Musical Mayhem with Tortoise and Hare," for all ages (3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult), will be presented at 7 p.m. June 19 and 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. June 20 at North Carroll; and 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 21 at Taneytown. Registration is required.
