London company is hired to handle overseas marketing
Avenue Sales and Marketing of London has been hired to handle the marketing of business contacts and connections between Baltimore-Washington International Airport and overseas travel agents, individual travelers and corporations in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
"We have hired seasoned professionals to meet the growing needs of the second fastest-growing airport in the country and its customers," said David L. Blackshear, executive director of the Maryland Aviation Administration.
"Avenue will be working all the communications channels abroad to make sure international travelers know that BWI provides world-class service between the Baltimore-Washington area, Ireland and the United Kingdom," Blackshear said.
Avenue Sales and Marketing is the second company hired to promote overseas connections to BWI. The MAA also has an independent consultant, Gerda DeRoy Arnauts, marketing BWI services from an office in Brussels, Belgium.
New USO lounge sees an increase in travelers
The new USO International Gateway Lounge in the lower level of BWI's international terminal had 2,000 military travelers heading to and from duty stations throughout the world during the first quarter of this year. This was more than double the number who used the old USO lounge the same quarter last year.
The lounge is expected to accommodate more than 150,000 travelers each year.
Facilities include a children's play area, a computer room, a "quiet room," a snack bar, a baggage room and a lounge with a big-screen TV.
From its founding, the USO has been staffed entirely by volunteers, many of whom are veterans.

Benson-Hammond House plans strawberry festival
BWI's historic Benson-Hammond House will be the site of the Ann ArrundellCounty Historical Society's 10th annual strawberry festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Visitors may tour the Benson-Hammond House and the Browse and Buy Shop, which includes many antiques, collectibles and a collection of antique dolls.
Parking is available at the Lindale-Brooklyn Park Middle School, Andover and Hammonds Ferry Roads.
There will be free shuttle bus service from the school, or visitors may follow the BWI Trail, less than a mile, to the strawberry festival.
