Police say 2 men are suspects in 30 burglaries
TOWSON -- Baltimore County police said two men charged in a May 27 burglary are suspects in as many as 30 burglaries in which $70,000 was taken from area homes.
Police charged Dale Madairy, 21, of the 4300 block of Long Green Road and Troy Matthew Fowler, 20, of the 8400 block of Loch Raven Blvd. in a burglary in the 14000 block of Falls Road, where jewelry valued at $19,000 and an $1,800 dirt bike were stolen.
Although most of the burglaries occurred in northern Baltimore County, police said the men are suspects in at least two burglaries in Harford County and two in southern Pennsylvania.
Dance, fund-raiser to benefit ailing police sergeant
MIDDLE RIVER -- A dance and fund-raiser to benefit an ailing county police sergeant will be held at 8 p.m. June 9 at the Middle River Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Co. on Leland Ave.
Sgt. Scott McElfish, an officer since 1989, has a rare form of cancer and is on sick leave. Assigned to the White Marsh Precinct, McElfish has worked patrol in various sections of the county, including the east side.
McElfish also worked as a volunteer football coach at Eastern Technical High School. Information: 410-574-7394.
County's cable channel to get new name Monday
TOWSON -- Baltimore County's Cable Channel 2 is getting a new name and place on the dial. Beginning Monday, county residents who subscribe to Comcast Cable can tune in to Baltimore County Television (BCTV), Channel 25.
The channel will feature county programs, County Council meetings, Mass Transit Administration traffic and weather reports.
Festival to be held at Woodbridge Elementary
CATONSVILLE -- A spring festival will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Woodbridge Elementary School, 1410 Pleasant Valley Drive.
The event will include games, prizes, food, entertainment and a silent auction. Fire departments, community groups and the Baltimore County police will have exhibits. Information: 410-719-7251.

Man killed, another wounded in apparent drug dispute
An 18-year-old man was killed and a 20-year-old man was wounded Wednesday night when two gunmen opened fire at North Ensor and East Biddle streets in East Baltimore's Johnston Square neighborhood.
Police said Jason Crippins of the 1200 block of N. Homewood Ave. was shot several times in the upper body and right leg about 11 p.m. and was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital at 12: 19 a.m. yesterday. Police identified the wounded man as Corbin Dawson of East Baltimore, who was shot in the leg and was in stable condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Agent Angelique Cook-Hayes, a police spokeswoman, said that the motive was a drug dispute and that both men apparently were the targets. No arrests have been made.
Police find body of man in E. Baltimore garden
A man whose body was found in an untended garden in East Baltimore early yesterday was a homicide victim, but police declined to reveal the cause of death.
Detective Ron Berger of the homicide unit said officers responding to a report found the body shortly after 5 a.m. in the weed-covered garden in the 1700 block of Ellsworth St. near Preston Street.
The death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy, but Berger declined to provide details. He said evidence found at the scene indicated that the man had been dead for about 24 hours. The victim's identity was being withheld pending notification of kin.
Library hours may be cut at neighborhood branches
Friends of the Enoch Pratt Free Library say that service hours may have to be cut at neighborhood branches during the fiscal year that begins July 1, despite a planned $4.5 million budget increase.
Ronald Owens, president of the support group, told the City Council at Taxpayers Night last night that the proposed $26.7 million appropriation would fall $1.2 million shy of library needs for fiscal 2001.
Much of the proposed budget increase -- $3.1 million from the state -- is slated for pay raises, reinstituting Friday hours at the central library downtown and enhancing delivery services.
PAL program to sponsor talent show at school today
The Police Athletic League is sponsoring a talent show from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Walbrook High School in the 3000 block of Edgewood St.
Co-sponsor TCI Media Services will tape the show for broadcast on the city's cable community access channel. Police officers will participate in the show, and PAL members ages 7 to 17 will compete for prizes.
"Participants will gain a better understanding and appreciation of the performing arts," said Vanessa Milio, deputy director of the PAL program.
Bike Jam, Polish Festival to be held at Patterson Park
Patterson Park will be the site of a Bike Jam from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow. The free event is sponsored by Friends of Patterson Park.
The event will feature road and mountain bike races on one-mile loops in the park, antique bikes, bike decorators, a bike rodeo and an artist who drips paint onto a large canvas from his bike.
The Polish Festival also will be held in the park from noon to 10 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
