Ryan Kyle Calvert Hall, baseball
Kyle's four-hitter with nine strikeouts on Thursday stopped No. 4 Mount St. Joseph, 9-4, to put the third-ranked Cardinals in the driver's seat in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs. It was the All-Metro left-hander's second straight win over the Gaels and their ace Gavin Floyd and the third in four matchups in two years. Kyle (8-1, 1.91 ERA) has signed with St. John's in New York. Calvert Hall has to be beaten twice in the double-elimination tournament thanks to Kyle's clutch performance.
Kim Lawton Severna Park, girls lacrosse
The senior goalie closed out a stellar three-sport career with a sparkling effort to lead the Falcons to a 5-4, triple-overtime win against Liberty in the Class 4A-3A state championship game. She had nine saves in all -- four coming in overtime with two at point-blank range during sudden death. Lawton, who will play lacrosse at Loyola College, also won three state titles as goalie on Severna Park's field hockey team. She also was an All-Anne Arundel first-team forward in basketball for the Falcons.
