Community pillars to mark Howard's 150th anniversary

The Sesquicentennial Celebration will mark Howard County's 150th birthday with the Pillars of the Community Project.

Fifty cylinders in various heights will be grouped by theme on public property throughout the county from July to July 2001.

Participants are encouraged to decorate the pillars in a way that voices the hopes, wishes and memories of the county.

Several workshops will be held to help participants with possible designs, which should reflect an aspect of the county's history.

County government offices to be closed Memorial Day

Howard County government offices, courts, libraries and the landfill will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday.

The 911 center, police and fire departments do not close on holidays and will remain staffed.

No recycling or trash service will be offered Monday. Parking meters will operate.

Trash will be collected May 30. Monday recycling will be collected June 5.

County library branches will be closed Sundays, beginning this weekend, until September.

African Art Museum seeks volunteers at its gallery

The African Art Museum of Maryland, 5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, is seeking volunteers. Duties include typing, filing, data entry, event coordination, festival booth staffing and gallery staffing.

Governor dedicates week to state's working parents

Gov. Parris N. Glendening has declared this Maryland Week of the Working Parent.

Activities include an "I'm a Working Parent" sticker campaign, a community conference and a business breakfast briefing.

Stroke club program to focus on exercise

The Howard County Stroke Club will meet from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Florence Bain Senior Center.

The program will be exercise for stroke victims.

The club is dedicated to offering support, programs, resources, trips and fun for any stroke survivor, caregiver, friend or family member.

Lung Association seeks volunteers for 5K race

The American Lung Association is seeking volunteers for its Clean Air Challenge 5K on June 25 at Marriott International corporate headquarters in Bethesda.

Volunteer opportunities include food setup and cleanup, coordination of the awards ceremony and finish-line management.

Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. The race will start at 8 a.m.

Event proceeds will support the association's asthma education programs.
