Travelers urged to plan ahead for Memorial Day

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the Maryland Aviation Administration is advising travelers to plan ahead and allow enough time to make their way through Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

On an average day, more than 47,000 people use BWI, and those numbers typically increase during a holiday weekend. The airport recommends domestic air travelers allow two hours for parking, transportation to the airport terminal, baggage check-in and security screening before their flights depart.

International travelers should arrive 2 1/2 to 3 hours before their flights.

For passengers who drive to BWI, the most plentiful and inexpensive parking is in the Blue and Green satellite lots on Aviation Boulevard, officials said.

The lots charge $7 per day, and parking is free on the seventh day.

Closer parking is available in the BWI Short-term Parking garage and the Express Service Parking lot.

Parking information is available at 800-I-FLY-BWI or www.bwiairport.com. Or AM 1040, within 3 miles of BWI.

Southwest Airlines adds more flights this summer

Southwest Airlines continues to add flights and destinations from BWI, airport officials said.

Southwest has announced it will operate two daily nonstops to Las Vegas; four to Phoenix; and nine to Nashville, starting Aug. 6.

Southwest initiated service to Albany, N.Y., on May 5 and will begin flying between BWI and Houston and Austin, Texas, in July.
