Workers challenged to a 'clean' commute in exchange for prizes
County Executive James N. Robey and the County Council are challenging commuters to bike, walk or take a train or bus during Clean Commute Week, May 21-27.
Those who pledge to be "clean commuters" will have a chance to win Orioles club-level tickets, theater tickets, dinner for two in Baltimore, a dinner and show at Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia, or brunch at Morgan's Seafood Grilleat the Hilton Columbia.
Commuters can accept the challenge by calling the Commuter Assistance Office by tomorrow and promising to use public transit, carpool, walk or bike at least one day during Clean Commute Week.
State delegates to brief residents on 2000 session
Dels. Shane Pendergrassand Frank S. Turnerwill hold community meetings to discuss the issues and outcomes of the 2000 legislative session.
The dates are 8 p.m. Tuesday at Long Reach Village Center; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kings Contrivance Village Center; 8 p.m. June 6 at Owen Brown Village Center; 7:30 p.m.; June 12 at Savage Carroll Baldwin Hall; 8 p.m. June 13 at Oakland Mills Village Center.

Dinner dance to benefit Blandair Foundation
Friends of the BlandairFoundation will hold a dinner dance fund-raiser at 7 p.m. June 10 at the Hilton Hotel in Columbia.
The event will include dinner, two brief talks, dancing and a silent auction. The proceeds will benefit the preservation of the Blandair Farm.

Domestic Violence Center raises $27,000 at benefit
Domestic Violence Center of Howard County raised $27,000 at its Dinner, Dance and Silent Auction on April 1 at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville. More than 360 people attended the charity function. The money will help victims of domestic violence in Howard County.
MADD collecting items for yard sale in fall
Mothers Against Drunk Driving is collecting used items for its Giant Yard Sale in September.
The group is seeking household items, small appliances, furniture, toys, sporting goods and clothing.
Funds will support local programs to combat drunk driving and underage drinking. All donations are tax-deductible.
Grant program offered by Horizon Foundation
Horizon Foundation, the county's largest philanthropic organization, has announced a new grant program: Strategic Initiatives.
The grants will be used to address issues identified during the foundation's strategic planning process: substance abuse, older adult health and adolescent health.
Applicants for strategic initiative grants must submit a letter of intent. If selected, a full proposal will be required.
The deadline is May 26.
