A lacrosse doubleheader between two county teams in the Class 4A-3A West region tops the list of first-round regional action tonight.
For the third time in six days, the Westminster and South Carroll boys and girls lacrosse teams will meet in Winfield.
The Cavaliers girls squad (6-6) swept the Owls (4-8) this year, courtesy of an 11-5 win last Friday and an 11-7 decision on Tuesday. Tonight's game is scheduled for 5:30.
The boys split their season series, with Westminster's 11-9 victory on Tuesday denying South Carroll a chance to capture the county title outright. The rubber match between two teams with identical 7-5 records - both of which share the county crown with Liberty - is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
In other Class 4A-3A West first-round action, North Carroll meets River Hill. The Panthers girls (9-3) will try to add the Hawks (7-4) to their three-game winning streak. The contest will start at 4 p.m.
The Panthers boys (7-5) will have to contain a Hawks team (9-3) that routed Liberty and Westminster by a combined 28-9 margin earlier this season. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Liberty travels west to face Frederick, which is fielding its first varsity lacrosse teams this season. The Cadets boys squad is 3-9; Liberty is 7-5. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Frederick girls team owns a respectable 5-7 mark but should be no match for a Liberty squad (11-2) that won its 10th county championship in Courtney Vaughn's 13 seasons of coaching. The game will start at 5 p.m.
In Class 3A-2A-1A first-round action, Francis Scott Key will play host to Northwest of Montgomery County. The Eagles boys are 7-7; their Germantown opponents compiled a 5-4 record. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
The Northwest girls team is 8-2 and could prove to be a formidable matchup for Francis Scott Key, which is 3-9. The game will start at 5 p.m.
Two county winners
Monday marked the finale of a yearlong mission for two county teams.
The seventh-ranked Liberty baseball squad grabbed a piece of the Central Maryland Conference championship with a 14-11 win against North Carroll.
The Lions, who finished 11-11 last season, garnered a 16-2 overall record and a 12-2 mark in the conference. Liberty will share the crown with Urbana, which also finished 12-2 in the conference.
"At the beginning of the season, I knew we would have a quality foundation and that we would have the ability to play well, but potential doesn't mean a whole lot," said coach Erik Barnes, whose Lions play host to North Carroll at 4 p.m. tomorrow for the fourth time this season. "I'm really proud of the hard work they put into it."
The No.13 Westminster softball team also earned a slice of the conference title but needed Frederick's 2-1 victory over Thomas Johnson Monday night to help the Owls tie Thomas Johnson with identical 11-3 records in the conference.
N. Carroll tennis seeds
Two of the top seeds in four brackets in the county tennis tournament tomorrow and Saturday belong to North Carroll.
Freshman Maria Covell, the top singles player for the Panthers, is the top seed in the girls singles bracket, courtesy of a 7-0 mark against county opponents.
