A Severn man was killed and his wife was seriously injured yesterday afternoon when their motorcycle collided with a car near Glen Burnie -- one of two fatal accidents in the county during the weekend.
Police said Mark M. Kent, 33, was driving the motorcycle with his wife as a passenger when a Chevrolet Corsica driven by an 80-year-old man turned in front of its path on Quarterfield Road near Glen Burnie.
The driver, Frank A. Villa of the 1200 block of Reece Road in Severn, was steering the car from the westbound lane into a convenience store parking lot about 3 p.m., crossing the path of the eastbound bike, said Officer John Brothers, a county police traffic investigator.
The motorcycle skidded but was unable to avoid striking the car, Brothers said. The couple, of the 800 block of Elmhurst Road, were thrown from the bike.
Kent was pronounced dead shortly after 4 p.m. at North Arundel Hospital. His wife, Deborah Kent, 42, was listed in serious condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Brothers said the accident is being investigated.
The other fatal accident occurred about 9 p.m. Friday on Route 2 at Solomons Island Road, and involved a turning car driven by an unlicensed teen-ager, police said.
Police said the southbound car, a Honda CRX driven by Fidel A. Contreras, 18, of the 300 block of Farragut Court in Annapolis, turned left at an intersection into the path of a northbound truck.
The truck, driven by William J. Niederberger, 42, struck the Honda's passenger door.
Killed in the crash was Contreras' passenger, Carlos A. Ochsta, 17, of the 200 block of Hilltop Lane in Annapolis.
Contreras was in serious condition at Shock Trauma with head and chest injuries, while Niederberger was released after treatment for minor injuries at Anne Arundel Medical Center, police said. Brothers said Contreras had an expired learners permit.
