Relatives of a 13-year-old boy who was accidentally shot and killed by a friend have established a charitable fund to help pay funeral expenses and hospital bills.
The family plans to use any extra money to establish a scholarship in the name of Tanun "Byrd" Wichainaraphong so that "people can remember his name," said his aunt, Thaniya Chareonvaravut.
Tanun was shot April 19 by a friend showing off a .22-caliber rifle in an Ellicott City apartment. He died two days later.
The friend, who turned 16 on Monday, is scheduled to appear before a juvenile master Tuesday. He has been charged with two counts of reckless endangerment involving other youths in the room at the time of the shooting and faces other charges.
The teen-ager is being held for observation at Finan Center, a psychiatric hospital in Cumberland. The Sun is withholding his name because he is a juvenile.
