Man sleeping in car with motor running charged by police

A Westminster man was arrested early Sunday after police found him asleep at the wheel of his car, with the engine running and his foot on the brake, court documents showed.

Police reported seeing a man in his car on Charles Street in Westminster. After attempts to wake him were unsuccessful, the officer entered the passenger-side door of the vehicle and shut off the engine.

After waking the man and getting him out of the car, the officer reported seeing a handgun on the floorboard of the car and detected an odor of alcohol.

Charging documents said Brian A. Costley, 40, of the first block of Bishop St. had a breath-alcohol content of 0.15. The legal limit to operate a motor vehicle is 0.10.

Costley was charged on counts of driving while intoxicated, illegally transporting a handgun and driving on a suspended and revoked license. He was released on a $10,000 bond, court documents showed.
