For Grant, the gloves finally fit; Equipment is now to challenger's liking

NEW YORK -- Michael Grant, against whom Lennox Lewis will defend his International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council titles tomorrow night, finally found a pair of gloves that fit.

Until yesterday, when he found a pair of 10-ounce Reyes gloves comfortable enough to wear, Grant had claimed the equipment fit his right hand, but not his left hand.

On Tuesday, his managers had threatened to pull out of the fight because Lewis, as champion, had been awarded the decision to choose, and insisted on Reyes.

Carl Moretti, matchmaker with promoter Main Events, said Grant resolved the issue with the 15th pair he tried on yesterday morning.

NOTES: Referee Arthur Mercante Jr., the official for the controversial draw in Lewis-Evander Holyfield I, also will work Lewis-Grant. It will be Mercante's ninth title fight. ... New York's Melvina Lathan, New Jersey's Steve Weisfeld and Thailand's Anek Hongtongkam will be the judges for Lewis-Grant. Weisfield has judged 12 title fights, and Lathan has judged six. Lewis-Holyfield I sparked an investigation into how the judges scored a fight most felt Lewis won. So last week, the camps of Lewis and Grant were given a list of judges from which to choose from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Thailand. ... A group of about 25-to-30 boxing writers, headed by Wallace Matt Matthews of the New York Post and George Kimball of the Boston Herald, met yesterday to formulate their own individual monthly boxing rankings for the sport's 15 different divisions. The group has been endorsed by the AFLCIO.
