The Howard County Department of Public Works plans to repave Main Street and Maryland Avenue in historic Ellicott City beginning Sunday.
The work is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through May 3 to avoid traffic -- both automobile and pedestrian -- in the popular tourist area.
"It's primarily a safety issue," said Betsy McMillion, public education coordinator with Public Works.
The project will be noisy, she warned. Workers will dig up the two streets before adding a new layer of pavement.
Only one lane will be closed at a time so drivers won't have to take a detour. But people will not be able to park on the streets.
It's been at least 10 years since Main Street has been repaved, McMillion said.
