20 submit applications for job of city parks, recreation director

A national search for a director of recreation and parks has yielded 20 written applications, officials said.

About a dozen of the 20 will be interviewed by telephone by an Indiana career-consulting company hired by the city, officials said.

By May 10, the interviews are expected to net five or six finalists who will meet with Mayor Martin O'Malley. The list will include current Director Thomas Overton. Deputy Mayor David Scott said a director is expected to be chosen by the end of next month.

Developer is appointed to Housing Authority panel

Developer Otis Warren has been appointed to the five-member board of commissioners of the Housing Authority of Baltimore City by Mayor Martin O'Malley.

Warren, owner and chief executive officer of Otis Warren Real Estate Services, has financed, developed and managed more than 1.5 million square feet of residential and commercial property in the city.

Man, 39, fatally shot near his west side home

A 39-year-old man was shot and killed Monday night near his West Baltimore home, and police said yesterday they knew of no motive or suspect.

Mitchel T. Hall was shot once in the chest about 11: 30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Riggs Ave., said Maj. Michael Bass, a police spokesman. Police found Hall on the sidewalk 12 doors from his house, and his mother and brother rushed to the scene.

Bass said detectives found evidence that several shots had been fired, with one bullet striking the storm door of a rowhouse and another hitting a bay window.

Schools collaborate to offer recreation, parks degrees

CATONSVILLE -- Community College of Baltimore County and Frostburg State University are teaming up to offer associate's and bachelor's degree programs in recreation and parks management.

A ceremony to formalize the partnership will be held at 10: 30 a.m. tomorrow at CCBC's Catonsville campus. At 9: 45 a.m., students will demonstrate rock climbing techniques on an indoor rock wall and rappelling from the gymnasium's 60-foot dome.

Volunteer office managers sought for senior centers

TOWSON -- Volunteer office managers are needed to work 10 to 30 hours a week in senior centers throughout Baltimore County.

Duties include computer typing, data input, development and reproduction of fliers and scheduling interviews and appointments.

Woodbridge Elementary to hold yard sale Saturday

CATONSVILLE -- Woodbridge Elementary School will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on school grounds, 1410 Pleasant Valley Drive.

The cost is $10 per space, though no reservations are needed. Participants must provide tables.
