Stepping lightly into summer

Few people are brave -- or fit -- enough to wear a thong to the beach.

This summer, however, many people will be donning thongs. Thong sandals, that is.

For women, also look for shoes featuring wood bottoms, beaded embellishments and animal prints. Clogs and mules are still in. Heels are lighter and more sculpted. Colors like red are back in a big way.

For men, the casual shoes of summer include chunky sandals and streamlined slides. Look for updated soles and toes to give some European spark to classic styles.

Dress your age

Lots of little girls don't dress like little girls -- they dress like miniature women.

Ten-year-olds wear tube tops. Eight-year-olds don platform heels. And let's not even bring up the subject of bikinis.

Relief is in sight. American Girl, the company that created the popular books and dolls by the same name, features hip, attractive, age-appropriate clothing and accessories designed for girls ages 8 and older in its Spring American Girl Gear catalog.

The clothes are bright and feminine without being dowdy. There are capris and tank tops, shorts and T-shirts for play, twin-sets, sundresses and skirts for dress-up. And the bathing suits -- tropical print bikinis with boy shorts and tankinis -- are hip, but not too revealing.

The accessories -- kerchiefs, beaded jewelry and bucket hats -- are pretty cute, too.

Soaps make scents

Take a sniff of Tommy Hilfiger's new soaps, and one thing comes to mind: tutti-frutti. Not since Bonne Bell Lipsmackers has a health and beauty product smelled so sweet.

The soaps, which come in such scents as cranberry burst, peach party and righteous raspberry, lather quickly and moisturize the skin. Plus, the $5 3.5-ounce bars come imprinted with the much-sought after Tommy Hilfiger logo.

The soaps are part of Hilfiger's health and beauty line of products available exclusively at tommy's shop, a store-within-a-store located in select department stores nationwide. Also look for such cutely named items as Hair Rehab shampoo, Clean Scheme Gel Cleaner and Nitty Gritty Body Scrub.

Spring makeup tips

Steal the makeup look of the spring fashion shows with these tips from Sergio Corbacho, regional makeup artist for AWAKE cosmetics:

*Highlight high cheekbones with a small amount of blush. Start the stroke on the apple of the cheek and gently sweep up toward the ear, keeping the stroke on the cheekbone.

*If you have large eyes, don't use an eye shadow that is the same color. Instead, emphasize your eyes with the same color mascara.

*If you have full lips, don't overdo the color. Use a lip brush to smooth on color and then highlight the middle area.

AWAKE cosmetics are available at Neiman Marcus.
