Former District Court judge to head Hispanic, Latin group
Robert Morales, a former District Court judge and federal mediator, has been named interim president of the Organization of Hispanic/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County.
Morales, who recently became a community relations specialist for the Annapolis Police Department, replaces Maria Sasso Taylor. She resigned last week after being suspended by the organization's board of directors March 13, said Rick Ferrell, spokesman for the group. Taylor had served as president since November and had several differences with the board.
The board also voted to remove Donald Dove from the board of directors for differences of opinion and appoint John Lavin in his place, Ferrell said. The nonprofit organization offers assistance to Hispanics and Latin Americans in the county.
Detention center volunteers to be honored at banquet
Anne Arundel County officials will honor tonight the 400 volunteers who work in the two county detention centers.
Volunteers spend 6,500 hours a year providing religious, substance abuse, education, counseling and sewing services for county inmates, according to officials.
The appreciation banquet will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Annapolis, with Annapolis Mayor Dean L. Johnson as keynote speaker.
Man gets 6 years for injuring boys with homemade bomb
FREDERICK -- A Pasadena man was sentenced to six years in jail yesterday for injuring two boys with a homemade bomb during an air show in Frederick.
The sentence was the maximum allowed under a January agreement in which Jeremy Horst, 19, pleaded guilty to first- and second-degree assault. Frederick County Circuit Judge G. Edward Dwyer suspended another 14 years of jail time and ordered Horst placed on supervised probation for five years after his release.
Horst, a former Civil Air Patrol member, used a heating unit from a food pack to make an explosive device that injured a 17-year-old boy and his 12-year-old brother at the Confederate Air Force show Aug. 23, 1998. The two boys were Civil Air Patrol members.
