Staines, Retrievers roll, 20-5; UMBC women win fourth in last five; Mount falls; Nation; Lacrosse

Sophomore midfielder Ashley Staines (Overlea) scored four goals to power host UMBC past Wagner, 20-5 in Northeast Conference women's college lacrosse action yesterday.

UMBC (4-4, 2-0) has won four of their last five games.

With the score tied at 2-2, Staines, who has 19 goals in six games, scored twice in the span of a minute to start an 11-1 Retrievers run in the final 21 minutes of the first half. She capped the run with her fourth goal with 2: 33 left for a 13-3 UMBC advantage over the Seahawks (6-4, 1-2) at the half.

Monmouth 12, Mount St. Mary's 6: The Hawks (5-2, 1-1) -- led by Stephenie La Grossa's three goals -- scored the final seven goals of the game over 22 minutes to defeat the host Mount (4-4, 1-1) in Northeast Conference action.

The Mount (4-4, 1-1 NEC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Amy Harris and Beth Fischer, but Monmouth (5-2, 1-1 NEC) got goals from Rachel Tringali and Kristen Hall while keeping the Mount scoreless for over 15 minutes to take a 3-2 lead.

Men

No. 8 Duke 14, Harvard 8: Senior Jared Frood scored four goals and Nick Hartofilis added three to power the Blue Devils (7-2) past the Crimson (5-1) in Durham, N.C.
