Woman, son seriously injured in JFX accident; lanes closed

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A Northeast Baltimore woman and her 20-month-old son were seriously injured yesterday in a two-vehicle accident on the southbound Jones Falls Expressway, about one-half mile south of Northern Parkway, police said.

The accident closed southbound driving lanes from 2: 30 p.m. to 4: 30 p.m., forcing traffic onto the shoulder. Traffic was backed up almost to Interstate 695 in Baltimore County, police said.

"Unless you have a helicopter, you are not getting downtown," a Northern District police dispatcher advised officers stuck in the traffic about 4: 20 p.m.

Richard Schildtknecht of White Hall was traveling south in a 1996 GMC Yukon when he struck a stalled Chevy Spectrum driven by Carvoyne Smith, police said.

Smith, 43, and her son, Da-'onne Hannie, both of the 5400 block of Belle Vista Ave., had to be extricated from their vehicle, police said. They were transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where they are listed in serious but stable condition.

Schildtknecht, 45, was not injured.

Baltimore City Traffic Unit investigators are reconstructing the accident, a spokesman said.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused Smith's car to stall in a driving lane.
