Fine furniture outlet
We're used to designer clothing outlets, shoe warehouses, and scratch-and-dent major appliance sales. But a manufacturers' outlet for fine furniture? That's exactly what Dallas-based The Home Co. does, and has begun doing at a new 66,000-square-foot store at Prime Outlets in Hagerstown.
The store sells such brands as Henredon, Ralph Lauren, Baker, Hickory Chair, and Lexington. The company says furniture and home decor accessories are marked 40 percent to 65 percent off traditional retail prices. The store is at 495 Prime Outlets Blvd., which is just off I-70 about 25 miles west of Frederick. For more information about the store, call 301-790-0300. The craft of gardens
The best gardens are more than collections of plants; they are decorated spaces with a harmony and wit all their own. A patriotic folk art gate, a charming bench or table, a living willow arbor, a wire-and-glass spider web that sparkles in the sun -- these are all things at home in the garden. These items and many, many more are in "Garden Crafts: A Practical Guide to Creating Hand-crafted Features for Your Garden," by Geraldine Rudge (the Lyons Press, $35). Available at booksellers this month.
