Gilman's state champion Faust wins National Preps title again; Kess, Lide are runners-up, helping Curley finish 6th

Three-time state champ Mike Faust of Gilman won his second straight National Preps crown at 215 pounds, and Archbishop Curley wrestlers Darian Kess (112) and Antwuan Lide (135) were second at the tournament at Lehigh University over the weekend.

Faust won five matches -- three by pin -- to improve to 43-0 on the season. Kess and Lide each went 5-1. Kess lost, 3-1, to Cody Cooperman of Blair Academy (N.J.) and Lide, 13-4, to Bullis Prep's two-time state champ, Matt Palmer, last season's runner-up.

Faust has won 79 straight matches since an overtime loss to Mark Hayes of DeMatha in the title bout of the Annapolis tournament in December 1998. Faust, whose career record is 142-6, twice avenged that loss to Hayes last winter.

Kess (44-3) was runner-up for the second consecutive season for Curley, which also got a fifth-place finish from Tom Boettcher (152) to finish sixth overall. Curley's finish was the highest for a Maryland team in the event this year.

For ninth-place Mount St. Joseph, Ryan Herwig (140), Steve Lanciotti (130) and Sam Lewnes (145) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

For McDonogh, Zak Johns (119) was second, and Ryan Davis (125) fifth. Annapolis Area Christian's Luke Palumbo (119) was third and Gilman's Tyrone Bowie (130) fifth.

Mike Price (heavyweight) of Bowling Brook Prep in Carroll County was seventh. He showed lots of heart in going the distance in a 16-3 loss to three-time National Preps champ Steve Mocco of Blair Academy. Mocco has won every other match this season by fall or technical fall, including matches against college wrestlers and an exhibition against Faust.
