9th-ranked Maryland routs Mount St. Mary's, 19-3; 14 Terps score goals in season-opening win


COLLEGE PARK -- The ninth-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team -- led by Mike Morsell's three goals -- dominated Mount St. Mary's, 19-3, in the season opener for both teams at Byrd Stadium yesterday.

Fourteen Terrapins scored goals and 17 got at least one point, as Maryland moved to 71-3-1 in season openers since 1924.

After a sluggish start -- the game was scoreless for 10: 52 -- the Terps got rolling at the end of the first quarter and never let up.

Chris Malone scored the first and third goals to give Maryland a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Andrew Combs assisted on Maryland's next three goals -- in the second quarter -- passing to Mike Mollot for his first college goal at 9: 55 of the second, Ricky Sears for his first college goal at 8: 42 and senior Marcus LaChapelle at 5: 41 to give the Terps a 6-0 lead.

Mount St. Mary's broke up the shutout when Doug Thompson scored with 5: 06 left in the second.
