Mount climbs over top of Wagner, 70-58; Delaware beats Towson; Navy loses 20th of season; State women


Kia Williams had a game-high 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting as Mount St. Mary's defeated Wagner, 70-58, last in a Northeast Conference women's basketball game in Staten Island, N.Y.

The Mountaineers (17-7, 12-3), who remained one game behind conference leader St. Francis, Pa., led by 15 with 6: 02 left before the Seahawks (11-13, 8-7) cut their deficit to five (63-58) with 2: 12 to go.

Mount St. Mary's clinched the win by going 7-for-8 at the foul line.

Delaware 76, Towson 60: Junior Cindy Johnson led four scorers in double figures with 22 points, boosting the host Blue Hens (17-7, 10-5 America East) to their fifth straight victory in an America East game in Newark, Del.

The Tigers (7-16, 5-10) were within 47-41 with 14: 58 left before the Blue Hens used a 12-0 run to push the led to 18 with 11: 09 remaining.

Jill McGowan's 16 points off the bench led Towson. The Tigers got 15 points from their starting five.

Holy Cross 80, Navy 71: The Crusaders (19-6, 9-1 Patriot League) won their eighth straight game, sending the host Midshipmen (4-20, 2-8) to their first 20-loss season.

Hilary Goodrich scored a career-high 24 points for Navy and eclipsed 500 for her career.

Sacred Heart 69, UMBC 61, OT: Dawn Werner scored 15 of her career-high 18 points in the first half as the Pioneers (12-12, 9-6) defeated the visiting Retrievers (7-18, 4-11) in a Northeast Conference game. Shiela Johnson's career-high 19 points led UMBC, which jumped out to a 16-4 lead.

UMES 80, Morgan State 71: Nicole Council led all scorers with 27 points as the host Fighting Hawks (7-18, 6-11) downed the Bears (13-10, 10-4) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Monique Liddell led Morgan State with 16 points.

UMES went 15-for-21 at the foul line in the first half on the way to a 44-34 lead at intermission.

Johns Hopkins 68, Franklin & Marshall 62: Leslie Ritter scored 25 of her game-high 32 points in the second half as the Blue Jays defeated the host Diplomats (12-12, 8-5) for the 12th straight time.

Ritter made 12 of 13 free throws in the second half to help Hopkins (19-5, 11-2) battle back from a nine-point deficit.

The Blue Jays went ahead to stay at 56-55 on Jennifer Butterwei's basket with 2: 23 left.

Gallaudet 78, Goucher 45: The Bison (13-11, 9-5) out-rebounded the Gophers 63-39 and out-scored Goucher 38-18 in the paint in a Capital Athletic Conference win. Jessica Young led Goucher (4-19, 1-13) with 19 points.

York 81, Salisbury State 77, OT: Despite Lisa Neylan's 22 points and 17 rebounds, the Sea Gulls (13-11, 6-8) fell to the host Spartans (16-8, 9-5) in a CAC game. Neylan forced overtime with a basket with 36 seconds left that tied the game at 67.

Washington College 66, Western Maryland 54: Senior guard Maggy Kilroy ended her college career with 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals, as the visiting Shorewomen (10-14, 4-9) downed the Green Terror. Jill Ibex led Western Maryland (11-12, 7-6) with 17 points.

Western Maryland, which trailed by 20 early in the second half, pulled within, 58-53, with 2: 01 remaining but missed their last eight attempts from the field.

Chowan 59, Villa Julie 38: Lachelle Walker led all scorers with 14 points as the Braves defeated the host Mustangs, who got a team-high 12 points from Nancy Zentz.

St. Mary's 68, Mary Washington 59: Felicia Harris had a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting as the visiting Seahawks (21-3, 11-3 CAC) set a school record for wins. Tenille McCatty chipped in 15 points for St. Mary's.
