J. J. Outlaw converted two free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation lifting No. 12 Mount St. Joseph to a 56-54 upset of host and No. 2 Towson Catholic, Friday evening in the Catholic League.
Outlaw finished with 15 points, including seven of eight free throws in the final period. The Owls' last attempt to win failed as Darnell Hopkins' three-pointer hit the back of the rim.
"We've been knocking on this door for awhile," said Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchely, whose team fell, 65-57, to the then-No. 1 Owls last month. "It was a big for win us."
The Gaels (17-7 overall) improved to 6-5 in the league, while the Owls slipped to 8-2.
Towson Catholic (21-6 overall), which played at the Atlantic Cape Tournament in Atlantic City last night, has dropped two of its past three games after winning the previous 17 games.
