Towson's late free throws halt charge by Boston U., 66-59; Mount rolls to 43-point win; Loyola tops Niagara, 81-72; State women


Jill McGowan had 14 points, and Towson made five of six free throws in the final 1: 09 to beat Boston University, 66-59, last night in an America East women's basketball game in Boston.

The Tigers (7-15, 5-9) led 21-13 at halftime, but the Terriers (7-15, 3-10) rallied to take their first lead, 49-48, with 12: 31 left.

Towson went ahead to stay on Mia Chapman's layup with 4: 35 left at 54-53.

Mount St. Mary's 94, St. Francis, N.Y. 51: The Mountaineers (15-6, 10-2) forced 37 turnovers en route to their largest margin of victory since 1995. Deanna Butters led the Mount with 20 points and 10 rebounds as every Mountaineer scored.

Loyola 81, Niagara 72: Jennifer Bongard had 16 points, including her 1,000th career point on a free throw with 46 seconds remaining, as the host Greyhounds (9-14, 6-8) downed the Purple Eagles (12-10, 9-4) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game. Bongard became the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 points.

Morgan State 84, Florida A&M; 76: Monique Liddell had 27 points and 10 rebounds, her second straight double double, as the host Bears (13-8, 10-3) defeated the Rattlerettes (7-13, 5-7) for the first time in school history.

Bethune-Cookman 79, Coppin State 70, OT: Exzavia Cunningham scored 33 points to lead the Wildcats (10-11, 6-6) past the host Eagles (11-12, 9-5) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Liesha Mitchell led Coppin with 24 points.

Bethune-Cookman forced the extra period on D'Shawn Watts' basket with 56 seconds left that tied the score at 68.

Stony Brook 68, Navy 59: Despite Erica Hayes' 23 points and 10 rebounds, the Midshipmen (3-19) couldn't overcome a nine-point halftime deficit and the Seawolves 55-35 rebounding edge, suffering their 15th loss in 16 games.

Long Island 68, UMBC 65: The Blackbirds' Kim Moro converted two of four throws in the final 16 seconds as Long Island (8-14, 7-6) held off the host Retrievers (5-17, 2-10) in a Northeast Conference game. Shalayna Johnson led UMBC with 14 points.

Long Island's Kellye Townsend (Hammond) scored a career-high 29 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career.

Bowis State 70, Shaw 46: Behind Deidre Fields' 22 points, the host Bulldogs (16-4, 6-1) won a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game. Beverly Winstead chipped in 15 points and Tiffany Moss had 13 for Bowie State.

Johns Hopkins 82, Dickinson 55: Leslie Ritter scored a game-high 15 points and added eight assists and six rebounds to lead the host Blue Jays (17-5, 9-2) to a Centennial Conference win.

Marymount 58, Goucher 32: Jamie Ricca and Rachel Taylor each had 12 points as the host Saints (12-10, 7-5) cruised to a Capital Athletic Conference win over the Gophers (4-17, 1-11).

St. Mary's 69, Salisbury State 61: The visiting Seahawks (19-3, 9-3) had three double-digit scorers on their way to a CAC win over the Sea Gulls (12-10, 5-7).

Western Maryland 69, Gettysburg 56: Patty Russo scored a season-high 16 points and Kris Brust a career-high 15 points for the visiting Green Terror, (11-10, 7-4) which downed the Bullets (12-9, 6-6) in the Centennial Conference.

Muhlenberg 59, Washington College 57: Lindsey St. Lawrence scored with 14 seconds left to lift the Mules (14-8, 9-2) to victory over the Shorewomen (7-14, 2-9) in a Centennial Conference game in Chestertown.
