Towson High's Kristen Cushman won the girls title over Bryn Mawr's Liza Franyo, and Gilman's Jonathan Minkowski was second to Gifford Sommerkamp, of Washington's Maret School, in the inaugural Maryland squash tournament at the Roland Park Racquet Club last weekend.
Finishing third and fourth, respectively, among the girls were Tara Hendiman and Lee Wheeler, both from Bryn Mawr. Jacob Himmelrich and Philip Beatson, each from Gilman, were third and fourth, respectively, among the boys.
More than 85 players from 20 schools competed.
Judy skates on Iowa
Mount St. Joseph graduate Tim Judy is one of the best defensemen on the Sioux City Musketeers hockey team, which competes in the Junior A League of the United States Hockey League in Iowa. The 6-foot, 170-pounder is being recruited by Northeastern University, Boston University and Lake Superior State.
As a Mount St. Joseph sophomore, Judy anchored the Gaels to the Maryland hockey state championship. As a junior, he won the "Brother Bob Award," given to the Gaels' top player.
Arlington Baptist's Jason Jones eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier in style Tuesday night.
The senior from Pasadena scored a career-high 38 points in a 68-42 victory over Baltimore Lutheran School to bring his career points total to 1,004.
The victory pushed the Eagles' record to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Loyola's Derek Melchor, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound lineman, has signed to play football at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.
Melchor, who played both offense and defense in high school, earned second-team All-City/County honors.
