Sun names vice president of new business development; Esmond formerly chief of Brand Builders unit; Publishing

Mary S. Esmond, director of Brand Builders at The Baltimore Sun Co., was named yesterday as vice president of new business development.

Esmond, 38, replaces Jean Halle, who in December was named chief financial officer and vice president of strategic development of Times Mirror Interactive, a new subsidiary of the newspaper's parent corporation.

"I'm thrilled," Esmond said.

"I think it's a great opportunity to lead a very talented department and oversee improvements to the current products and services we offer, as well as develop new products that offer new resources and options for customers."

Esmond joined The Baltimore Sun Co. in 1996 as director of Brand Builders. During her tenure, the department went from four to 16 people and revenue grew 300 percent.

"She's been a part of new business development all along and she really has a great record," said Michael E. Waller, publisher and chief executive of The Sun.

"I think Mary is going to do a terrific job."

After graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor of arts degree in radio, television and film, Esmond joined WBAL-TV in 1984 as a production assistant. She was later promoted to associate producer of "11 on Your Side," a consumer reporting segment of the evening news.

She then moved to radio station WYST (now WERQ), where she began her sales career and became the station's leading sales performer. Esmond moved back to television in 1994, recruiting underwriters for Maryland Public Television.

Esmond, who will report to Waller, has volunteered for the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery program and has been a Reading by 9 volunteer. She also serves on the Preakness Celebration board.

Her new position is effective Monday.
