ARE DREAMS of pumpkin pie, sweet potato casserole and oyster dressing dancing in your head? You might also be anticipating some extra holiday pounds weighing down your body.
You could work off the weight at the ninth annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk being held by the Maryland Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation at 8 a.m. Dec. 5 at Marley Station Mall.
Depending on fitness levels, participants have several choices. Outdoor types can compete against others in their age division in an 8-kilometer run on the B&A; Trail. Prizes will be awarded.
A 5-kilometer, noncompetitive walk/run will also be offered on the trail.
There will be a Mall Walk indoors, and children can participate in 50- or 100-yard dashes on the parking lot.
Each walker or runner is asked to raise at least $25 in pledges from sponsors. Participants will receive long-sleeved commemorative T-shirts, jingle bells for their shoes, a goodie bag and an invitation to a buffet-style breakfast in the mall after the event.
The top fund-raiser, with at least $1,000 in sponsor pledges, will win a Hot Springs Spa.
The main sponsors of the event are the Baltimore-Washington Hip and Knee Center at North Arundel Hospital and Marley Station Mall. Proceeds will benefit arthritis research and education.
Nearly 43 million Americans suffer from the disease, 866,000 of them in Maryland.
"We are looking for people from last year to come back and participate again, and we are looking to see a lot of new faces as well," said Louise Hanson. a Run/Walk co-chair. "It is a fun way to spend a Sunday morning, and it is for a good cause."
The Jingle Bell Run/Walk will be held throughout the nation, and four other events are scheduled in Maryland. Individuals and teams from local businesses and organizations are invited to participate.
