Recognizing radio excellence

There was a terrific tone to the Third Annual Achievement in Radio Awards luncheon -- not surprising with some of the best voices in Baltimore present.

They were at the Holiday Inn Select, Timonium, to receive 28 awards for excellence in Baltimore-area radio. The day's big winner was Oriole announcer Chuck Thompson, who was presented with A.I.R.'s Lifetime Achievement Award. Another of the day's victors was the event's beneficiary, the March of Dimes, Central Maryland Chapter, which collected about $45,000 in its fight to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.

Among the 280 guests mixing with the band of blue-ribbon broadcasters: Alan Hay, A.I.R. board chair; Gary Jordan, Bob Pettit, Buzz Hiken and Gayle Economos, board members; Steve Josey, board chair of March of Dimes; Tracy Hart, March of Dimes' executive director; Mark Thoner and Fran Lane, Lite 102 personalities; Bruce Elliot, WBAL announcer; Randy Dennis, Magic 95.9 morning-show host; Don O'Brien, WQSR announcer; Scott Lindy, WPOC program director; Jackson Whitt, WBAL production director; Wendy Corey, Shadow News director; and Rich Kohles, owner of AL&D; Advertising.
