City expects to raze stadium by spring 2001

Memorial Stadium will be razed by spring 2001 at a cost of nearly $10 million in state funds, city officials said Wednesday at a task force meeting with residents who live near the 29-acre site in Northeast Baltimore.

After the stadium is demolished, the property will be turned over to the nonprofit Govans Ecumenical Development Corp., which has been granted approval to build a senior-citizen housing complex and a YMCA on the site.

Public works officials said negotiating the transfer of funds from the Maryland Stadium Authority to the city has caused delays.
