Real-life learning; Of Consuming Interest

Young readers enjoy fantasy stories, but they are also quite eager to learn more about the world around them. A delightful source to satisfy their quest for knowledge can be found in a relatively new series titled, "The Eyewitness Readers" from DK Publishing.

These are easy-to-read, nonfiction books written at four reading levels for children ages 3 to 9. Each level contains eight books covering a variety of topics that fascinate children, and each book combines photographs and illustrations with absorbing facts.

The series includes titles such as: "Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!," "Days of the Knights," "Movie Magic," "Slinky, Scaly Snakes," "A Day at Greenhill Farm," "Tale of the Tadpole," "Volcanos," and "The Little Ballerina."

The benefit of these books is that they challenge children to read alone by beginning with shorter sentences and plenty of word repetition in the early levels and progressing to more complex sentence structures and vocabulary as the levels increase in difficulty.

Interesting Features:

*The vocabulary is challenging, and important facts are expanded in boxes in the margins.

*Children learn how to read nonfiction texts, including using a glossary and pronunciation guide.

*The books are fun to read aloud and contain captivating pictures to discuss.

*Each book has a reading level for grade and type of reader (independent or proficient).

*The books are reasonably priced: hardcover at $12.95 or paperback at $3.95, and readily available in book stores.
