A Circuit Court judge denied a motion yesterday to move a trial out of Carroll County for a Hampstead man who is accused of using the public library's Internet service to distribute child pornography.
Judge Raymond E. Beck Sr. said careful wording of questions used to seat an impartial panel of jurors would provide the defendant, Calvin Gary Horelick, 48, of the 4800 block of Hillock Lane, with a fair trial.
Horelick wanted the trial moved because of pretrial publicity and the likelihood that prospective jurors selected randomly from Carroll County voter and motor vehicle rolls have visited the library and paid taxes to support it.
According to court documents, Horelick was arrested in June after a New Jersey woman complained that a man using Carroll County Public Library's Internet provider service had sent pornographic pictures to her 11-year-old daughter through an online chat room.
Members of the Maryland State Police computer crimes unit, assisted by state police in New Jersey, traced the man's Internet account to Horelick, who is accused of giving the girl his home telephone number during online conversations.
