After dogging the steps of Magruder's Matt Seymour through the first 2 1/2 miles, Mount St. Joseph's Chris Wright appeared ready to make his move for the lead yesterday.
But the Montgomery Countian must have read Wright's mind, for it was Seymour who took off on a hill at just the right time and won the Knights Invitational at Baybrook Park in a meet record 15 minutes, 33.5 seconds for 3 miles.
Broadneck's Lauren Riesett won the girls' race in 18: 57, easily leading most of the way.
In team competitions, Severna Park's boys and girls both cleaned up, the boys beating out Magruder (85) and Mount St. Joseph (91) with 55 points and the girls (51) prevailing over Notre Dame Prep (70), Broadneck (92) and Archbishop Spalding (109).
The only one who dared to challenge Seymour through a quick first mile and thereafter was Wright, who ended up trailing the victor by about 70 yards.
The charge for the next three spots was interesting, with just four seconds separating Spalding's Dusty Lieb, Severna Park's Justin Marvel, and Mount St. Joseph's Greg Zmijewski in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
With three runners among the first eight finishers (2-5-8), it appeared St. Joe had a good shot at the team title. But Severna Park had depth, and its five scorers, led by Juston Marvel, finished 4-9-10-15-17.
The same held for the Falcons in the girls race, as the Funk sisters, Rebecca and Liz, finished 2-7 with Jamie Chase (10) and Brianna Kelly (14) also making it into the top 15.
Notre Dame Prep took second with its top-five runners finishing 9-13-15-16-17.
