Dennie DeWitt, who coached Brooklyn Park High's baseball team from 1982 to 1990 and later coached and taught physical education at Annapolis High School, died Wednesday in Bellefonte, Pa.
DeWitt, who was 48, died of a heart attack at his mother's home, where he had lived since a stroke disabled him several years ago.
"Dennie was old school in his love of baseball," said Tim McMullen, former Broadneck athletic director who hired DeWitt as an assistant coach at the old Brooklyn Park school in 1975. DeWitt became coach in 1982, when McMullen moved to Broadneck.
DeWitt's last teaching and coaching positions, as assistant football coach and head coach of indoor track, were at Annapolis in the mid-1990s.
He earned Anne Arundel County Coach of the Year honors in his first season as Brooklyn Park's baseball coach by leading the Bees to the first of two region titles they won under his direction.
DeWitt played baseball and football at Bellefonte High before playing the outfield at Penn State.
