Baltimore Sun’s BEST party in 2 weeks

Ways to break the ice; TALK ABOUT IT

THE BALTIMORE SUN

"How was your day at school?"

That question doesn't usually elicit much of an answer from our children. The best they usually do in answering us is, "OK, I guess."

Here are some conversation starters from "The School-Savvy Parent," by Rosemary Clark, Donna Hawkins and Beth Vachon. These questions will help you get answers about your child's school habits, her supplies, studies and more.

But remember: Ask only one or two questions at a time, or your student might really clam up!

* Questions about your child's health habits at school:

"Do you wash your hands after using the restroom?"

"Are you remembering not to share hats or combs with other students?"

"What are you eating at lunchtime?"

* Questions about how your child is getting along with others:

"How are you getting along with your teacher?"

"Who are you sitting or working with at school?"

"How are things going on the school bus?"

"What do you do outside at recess?"
