Park Heights resident killed when dirt bike collides with car

A Park Heights resident was killed yesterday afternoon when the dirt bike he was driving collided with a car in the 3000 block of W. Belvedere Ave.

Marvin Watts was traveling east in the westbound lane about 4: 30 p.m. when his bike struck a Lexus, driven by Stephanie Blankenship, 33, of the 3500 block of Cottage Ave., police spokeswoman Ragina L. Cooper said.

Watts was thrown to the rear of Blankenship's car, which went into reverse, running over Watts before striking three unoccupied parked cars, Cooper said.

Watts, of the 4000 block of Reisterstown Road, was pronounced dead at the scene. His age was not immediately available.

Blankenship and her passenger, Hattie Fortune, 46, of the 500 block of Palmer Ave., were treated at Sinai Hospital for minor injuries.

Driving dirt bikes on city streets is illegal, Cooper said, and some witnesses said the bike was being pursued by a Baltimore police cruiser.

Officer Albert Lemon of the Northwest Precinct denied pursuing Watts, but said he saw the collision while he was returning from investigating a report of an armed person, Cooper said.

Baltimore police are forbidden to pursue vehicles unless a person is being sought for a serious offense and a supervisor approves.

Police are investigating, and the results will be forwarded to the state's attorney's office, Cooper said.
