The Private Clubs team collected four points from the six matches that went to the 18th green, and took a 7-5 lead over the Publinx side on the first day of their fifth annual Challenge Cup at Pine Ridge Golf Course yesterday.
The Municipal players forged a 3 1/2-2 1/2 lead after the morning better-ball pairings, but the opposition used some late heroics in the afternoon foursomes to gain its lead. The matches conclude today with 12 singles pairings at Hillendale Country Club.
U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur: Baltimorean Andrea Kraus stumbled down the stretch, but her par-equaling 72 was enough to share the lead after the first round of on-site qualifying in Atlanta.
Kraus, the reigning Maryland State Women's Amateur titlist, was 3-under through 16 holes, then finished double bogey, bogey to fall back into a tie with Kathy Hartwiger of Birmingham, Ala.
MAGA Amateur: Faber Jamerson, Appomattox, Va., posted a par-72, and his 54-hole total of 212 was good for a three-stroke cushion on Jamie Slonis, Sicklerville, Pa., 74-215, after three rounds of the Middle Atlantic Amateur championship in Richmond, Va.
Jamerson, 22, the current Virginia Open champion, included three birdies in his tour. Jim McGuire (220), Alexandria, Va., and Hank Klein (221), Glen Allen, Va., shared the day's low round with 69s.
U.S. Seniors: Michael Sanger, Hydes, and Dave King, Sterling, Va., each shot 78 in the opening round of on-site qualifying in Portland, Ore. Richard Evenson, Noblesville, Ind., the father of Suburban Club assistant pro Mark Evenson, had 82. The early leader was Bob Hullender, San Antonio, winner of last week's Senior Legends Invitation tournament, with a 1-over-par 73.
