John Miller, who is one of only three Glen Burnie High wrestlers to win a state championship, has been given the task of succeeding Buddy Hepfer as the Arundel High head wrestling coach.
Hepfer, a member of the Maryland State Wrestling Hall of Fame, retired in June after 29 years (280-90-5, three state titles) as Wildcats coach.
Miller was a state heavyweight champion at Glen Burnie High in 1983 and right after graduation got into junior league coaching with the Millersville program (now the Arden Attackers).
After coaching a few years while attending the University of Baltimore and stopping, Miller got the urge to coach again and called Hepfer before the 1993 season.
"Buddy remembered me wrestling at Glen Burnie and told me to come on over to Arundel," said Miller.
"I learned a lot under him and I think my familiarity with the program got me the job."
"John offers continuity and he's capable, experienced, enthusiastic and mature," athletic director Bernie Walter said in announcing the hiring yesterday.
