Mission: To present and promote the arts and humanities. As a membership organization of artists, writers, scholars and businesses, the Creative Alliance cultivates community through collaboration. Founded in 1995, the organization originally served as an artists' guild, offering support services for artists and sponsoring exhibitions, lectures and performances. Since then, the group has also established itself as a vital community organization in Southeast Baltimore.
Latest accomplishments: During the summer, the Creative Alliance sponsored "Open Minds," a program for children in Southeast Baltimore that included lessons in reading and art skills. In July, the alliance joined forces with the Friends of Patterson Park and the Baltimore Bureau of Recreation and Parks to present a successful and well-attended synchronized swimming extravaganza at Patterson Park Pool. And throughout the year, the alliance sponsors members' forums, critiques, lectures and workshops.
On the horizon: "The Big Show '99: Transitions," fifth annual members' exhibition, Tuesday through Oct. 30 at eight venues in Fells Point. The show features about 80 pieces of work in all media. The opening reception and art walk from venue to venue are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Oct. 2-3, the alliance sponsors a Puppet Palace at the Fells Point Fun Festival. Also, the Creative Alliance is working with Southeast Development Inc. to convert the old Patterson movie theater on Eastern Avenue into the Patterson Cultural Center, a multiuse space that will include live-in artist studios, galleries, a theater, offices and a street-side cafe.
