Some of the nation's premier high school basketball players will converge on College Park this weekend, when Cole Field House and seven other floors on the campus of the University of Maryland will be in use during the ninth annual Charlie Weber HoopTV Invitational Tournament.
Games begin at 5 p.m. today and conclude Sunday afternoon.
The event will feature 64 Amateur Athletic Union teams, and another bracket of 16 under-16 teams, a first for the Weber Invitational.
Several nationally ranked players will participate. Topp Sports of South Carolina features Cincinnati-bound Jerome Harper; the New York Ravens are led by Andre Barrett, who'll attend Seton Hall; while D.C. Assault's roster includes Bernard Robinson (Michigan) and Cliff Hawkins (New Mexico).
Maryland fans can get a look at several Terps prospects, including North Carolina forward Chris Wilcox (Capitol Players) and Towson Catholic guard Keith Jenifer (Baltimore Select). The Baltimore Select roster also includes Severn guard Derrick Snowden, who has committed to Villanova.
Admission is $5 for adults. The event comes at the close of the NCAA's fall contact period, when college coaches can visit recruits. The Charlie Weber Invitational has drawn coaches from more than 150 colleges in the past, but the NCAA has considered making AAU events during the fall off-limits to college coaches.
"Even if the NCAA prohibits college coaches from coming to watch," Weber said, "there's no doubt we'll have the tournament next year."
