Red Sox update

Boston had closed to within 3 1/2 games of New York for the AL East lead before dropping back with consecutive losses to Toronto. The Red Sox still are in control of the wild-card race, holding a 4 1/2-game lead over Oakland. They have the second-best home record in the AL at 47-30, trailing only Oakland (50-28). The Orioles have taken three of five from Boston this season, including a two-game sweep at Fenway Park in July. The Orioles will get their first look at Pedro Martinez, who is threatening to win both the Cy Young and MVP awards. They've seen Saberhagen twice, going 1-1 against him. He shut out the Orioles for 5 1/3 innings in a 5-0 win in Baltimore on June 23, but took a 6-1 loss on July 21 despite allowing one earned run in 6 1/3. Mussina won that game after being a hard-luck loser on June 24, when he allowed two runs over nine innings and struck out 10. Erickson has faced the Red Sox once this year, beating them 5-2 on July 22.
